Well, I had my first committee meeting this afternoon. After being anxious for the last week, it's nice to not have much on my mind besides teaching and research.

However, comps are scheduled for the end of December (merry Christmas to meeee!). While not terribly stressful right now, I know they'll become so soon.

For now, though, here's to a stress-free evening at home! I'm going to watch my fishtank, which by the way is doing well.

So Jerry set me up with a microreef tank (2.5 gallons). I bought a few soft corals to stick in there on Saturday at the FRAG auction (8 coral frags for 48 bucks. Can it get better?) and it's off to the races.

I bought a Candy Cany Goby and a Peppermint Shrimp yesterday, although they are hard to see. Hopefully they'll get used to their new home soon and I'll see them more often.

So when they put a dog down, they use a combination of chemicals to stop nerve impulses. This includes sensory impulses and those which govern the pumping of the heart and brain function. The end result is that the dog just stops. It's painless (aside from the initial injection), peaceful and fairly quick.

Smudge is my friend, and I wouldn't let anyone put him down in any other way.

Making responsible adult decisions really sucks. No really, I mean it sucks. Smudge has been having seizures more often again, they are clustering together and are more violent than in the past. Yesterday morning he had four in the course of an hour -- full on grand mal seizures, in which he pooped, peed, vomited, howled, and hurt himself flopping around on the floor. This has previously been the sign that his meds need to get upped, but we told ourselves when he was first diagnosed that we weren't going to play that game forever. He shouldn't have to live a life where he's stoned out of his mind all the time, nor should he have to live with constant seizures because his meds are too low. We've realized that it's time to put him down, because we can't just keep him around to keep ourselves happy at his expense. He shouldn't have a shitty quality of life just so we don't feel sad.

As it stands now, we're going to put him down sometime next week, probably Thursday. But if he starts clustering again we're going to have to take him into the emergency vet clinic to have them do it. We thought that was going to be last night, but he only had one. We'll see how it goes. The problem is, when he's not seizing he's more or less normal, albeit stoned. How do you put down a dog who's excited to go for a trip in the car (to the vet to be put down)?

If people that know Smudge are interested in saying their goodbyes, they should come over Saturday afternoon for his going away party. We want it to be a happy time, not a sad one. The time for grief can come later.

God, this sucks.
